Anna Starkey is a multi-disciplinary creative practitioner exploring big questions, small sparks and the potential energy of ‘not knowing.’ **** This is an ongoing experiment somewhere between art, science and experience design, testing ideas out with participants, and shifting power by enabling collective curiosity and imagination. Their creative practice is also informed by lived experience of disability.
Anna is investigating the edges of what decentralised museum practice could be with an online thought experiment, The Imaginary Museum. Previously, as Creative Director of We the Curious, they led the transformation of a science centre to open up science as part of culture, building an open city lab, art-science gallery and a major permanent exhibition co-designed to explore questions contributed by the people of Bristol.
Starting out with degrees in Physics and Science Communication via a few years performing sketch comedy, Anna then spent a decade working in TV as a script editor, voice director and BAFTA nominated children’s animation writer. They produced the BBC Proms, live global cinema broadcasts from the Royal Opera House and the first series of BBC Young Dancer.
Anna has lectured on antimatter as UK Particle Physics Outreach Officer, delivered a TEDx talk on curiosity and produced live data-taking experiment events as Director of Impossible Projects for a pioneering public neuroscience laboratory. Most recently they were co-Head of Public Engagement at the History of Science Museum, Oxford and they’re currently part of a funded Stewarding Group supporting a community of practice across the UK to explore Transformational Governance.
